Jack

Pre-master project: Haptics in car consoles
Together with: Axel van Boxtel & Stijn Oude Lenferink

Driverless cars are seen as one of the key disruptors in the next technology revolution. However, the main barrier to adoption is the lack of public trust. Instinctively, users may find it “dehumanizing” to lose “choice and control” when behind the wheel (if there even is one) of a self-driving car.

Jack’s tactile interface stimulates the driver to have physical control over the car. Allow to feel the car’s shapes an intimate interaction that builds trust. By swiping horizontal, you make immediate changes to routing. By swiping vertical you alter the driving behaviour between 3 different styles. The simplicity of these interactions allows for everyone to take control, even without a license. The screen helps you to use Jack. It presents the status and the intentions of the car together with alternative routing options.
